International but local expertise
Around 50 years ago, Sergio Arencibia´s father started a small but international business: he was exporting coffee from the Canaries to the West Coast of Africa where Spanish troops where located. Emicela is now one of the world´s largest amenities manufacturers with businesses in America, Africa and Europe and exports to 35 destinations. It is also the largest candy manufacturer in Europe and although it still produces coffee, it now offers a wide portfolio of food and beverages. “Gran Canaria has a privileged location as a natural international hub that´s why our HQ is still in Gran Canaria”, says Sergio Arencibia, director of Emicela but he states that the company´s success lays in “our staff, hard work and low profile”. Betting on renewables, the company installed in 2011 a €6 million PV plant, the largest of the Islands and the 10th largest in Spain. The 1.75 MWp project has over 15 km of solar structures and can produce 2.6 GWh annually, enough to power 796 homes and avoid pollutant gases. “A key factor to our development is innovation. Our facilities are equipped with the latest technologies and we develop new products, packaging, cosmetic formulas; we register new patents and utility models many of them created for export. We have been certified in Quality Systems (ISO 9001) and Food Safety (according to the IFS) ".
